About

Who's behind this, why it exists, and how the lamp gets paid for.

The short version

Fuck Off, I’m Reading is a blog, and a small shop, for people who have already decided how the evening is going. Murder mysteries, horror, thrillers, the occasional romantasy, a cat, a chair, a blanket, and the firm, polite refusal to go out.

We write four kinds of things:

  • From the Armchair. Dispatches from the chair. Mostly about not leaving it. Silly, dry, said once.
  • Culture Desk. Book news, bookish internet, adaptations, and the publishing industry’s latest decision, delivered calmly.
  • Instructions. How-tos for the committed homebody. How to decline an invitation. How to read horror without checking the lamp. How to carry six hardcovers home from the library in one trip.
  • Shelf Reports. What to read next, sorted by mood, with the body count noted.

The voice

Elegant delivery, one blunt word. The whole joke is the contrast between how refined it looks and what it says. We don’t do exclamation points, we don’t do emoji, and we don’t throw insults. “Fuck off” here isn’t aggression. It’s a boundary, said in a flat, tired, entirely pleasant voice by someone who is about to find the body.

If a sentence only works shouted, it isn’t ours.

Who she is

We write for a reader we call Margaret. She reads somewhere between forty and ninety books a year and tracks them. She owns a Kindle and still buys hardcovers. She has a cat, or wants one. She has a specific chair. She has said the words “I’m not antisocial, I’m just done for today” out loud this month. She is not a “book nerd.” She is a grown woman with a plan for her evening.

If you are not Margaret, you’re welcome anyway. Just don’t sit in the chair.

Who’s writing

The Editor. Reads in a chair that is not available. Shares a blanket with a cat who does not share. Answers email on Tuesdays. Based somewhere quiet.

How the site pays for the lamp

Two ways. First, the shop: blankets, socks, mugs, candles, a few tees. Everything is made to order, in dark colours, with the designs you see on this site. Second, book links: when a Shelf Report sends you to Bookshop.org or Amazon and you buy the book, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you. Details on the disclosure page.

We never recommend a book we haven’t read or a product we wouldn’t put on our own sofa.

The newsletter

The Nightcap goes out on Sunday evenings. What we read, what we’re not leaving the house for, and one thing from the shop. Unsubscribe in one click. We’d do the same.
